Born in 1952 in the state of Orissa, His Holiness Swami Atmatattwananda Saraswati began with the career of a science teacher. During this time he suffered from severe colic. He tried different techniques of Allopathic, Homeopathic and Ayurvedic medicine to no avail. He was advised by a friend to seek Yogic treatment. So, he joined the Yoga school for treatment where through Yogic practices and cleaning he was completely cured within 3 months. This began a seeking of a deeper aspect of Yoga philosophy leaning towards spiritually and realization.
At the age of 28 he left his worldly life and joined the world famous master Paramahansa Swami Satyananda Saraswati in Munger. After 6 years with his master he travelled India and Nepal conducting Yoga Camps for 2 years. He was then sent by his master to look after a branch Ashram in Orissa. After 4 years in Orissa he then moved to Rishikesh, the holy city on the foothills of Himalaya and by the Holy river Ganges. He started reading Sanskrit, Vedanta and Indian Philosophy in Kailash Ashram, Rishikesh.
After 3 years he shifted to another Ashram and started teaching meditation classes to the foreigners in his leisure hours. In the year 1995 he was invited to Brazil to teach meditation and philosophy at an international yoga conference. From 1996 on-words Swami started teaching yogasana, pranayama, meditation and philosophy to the western students in Rishikesh. While teaching he felt the need to write a good yoga book. He published a book entitle as "steps to raja yoga" in the year 1999. Following the publication he was invited to many countries like USA, Germany, U.K, Brazil and Taiwan for delivering yoga seminars and giving yoga and meditation classes. From 2001 he stopped all types of teaching for 15 years and focussed on his personal meditation and spiritual practices. He resumed his teaching in order to share his personal experience by giving classes on pranayama, meditation and philosophy. He saw the needs of the students for better guidance in the higher aspects of yoga in a simple way.
He now stay in Mangal Ashram Rishikesh still leading an ascetic life style free of any institution or school. He still teaches regular classes like pranayama, meditation, yoga therapy and philosophy for 200 hours, 300 hours and 500 hours yoga courses in different schools in Rishikesh.
